How is reliability compared to tape backup?
On-line backup is extremely reliable and much easier to check than tape systems. Your online backup data is stored at one of our secure network facilities and is available to you 24 hours a day to add data or initiate a restore procedure. Regardless of the type of backup system you use, it is highly recommended that you periodically confirm data has backed up properly by selecting one or more files for restoration. Restore the files to a temporary location and confirm they can be opened by the appropriate application. Because the restore process can be very time consuming with a tape backup system, very few people test their data. With our online backup service it is so very easy to restore and test a sample of your data any time.

How does restore work?
The restore function is very, very easy to use. First, you launch the backup software. Select the restore function and then select the file or files you want to restore. Once selected, you push the restore button at which time you get to decide whether to restore the files to a temporary location selected by you or to return the files to their original folder. Select OK and the files are transmitted from the server back to your computer. The files are decrypted and decompressed upon arriving at your computer.
Additional functionality exists if you right mouse click a file to be restored. You can select the version of the file to be restored. Previous versions are available for approximately one month.

How much does it cost?
Price is determined by how much data you need to store on our server. We have a variety of service plans to meet the needs of our customers. Remember the data size on the server will be less than the size of the files selected for backup since files are compressed before being delivered to the server. Compression varies by the type of file chosen for backup. As a general rule, you should estimate a compression rate of 30-50%.

How secure are the encrypted files?
Your files are very secure. Users can choose between DES, Triple-DES and Blowfish encryption algorithms with encryption levels running from 56-bit to over 400-bit. Higher encryption rates will provide the greatest security but may extend the backup process slightly. We recommend the use of the highest encryption rate. As part of the security process, you will select an encryption key, much like a password. Keep the encryption key to yourself and remember that we do not have the key or any way to retrieve it should it be lost.

Can I backup multiple computers and what operating systems are supported?
Yes, you can backup multiple computers. The backup client software will only run natively on Windows 95, 98, Me, NT 4.0, 2000 and XP. If you want to backup computers with other operating systems, it is possible. By using mapped network drives and the Network Neighborhood, the software can backup data from any computer that is accessible via the network. A single backup client can backup the local computer and any number of local or remote network computers using the software's powerful user interface. Additional setup fees may apply if you are backing up more than one computer.

How long will my backups take?
Time will vary based on the amount of data to be backed up and the type of internet connection you have. The initial backup will take longer as all selected files will be transmitted to the server. Subsequent backups will take considerably less time as only new files or the portion of the file that changed will be transmitted to the server.

Where will my files be stored?

How often will my computer be backed up?
You can decide the frequency of your backups. Select the schedule menu and set the frequency and times for the backups. You can even create different backup sets and each backup set can have a different schedule. For your more critical data, you may want to schedule the backup daily and for less critical data, identified in a separate backup set, you may want to schedule the backup once a week. If you need assistance or want recommendations, please contact a backup support specialist at backup@eosinc.com or 800-261-6006.

Can I schedule the backup to run whenever I want?
Yes. Most businesses choose to run the backups after business hours. Individuals select times throughout the day to meet their varied schedules. Our server is available 24 hours per day to receive your backups.

How much data can I back up?
The amount of data to be stored on the server is based on the service plan you select. The client software will warn you if you are approaching your data storage limit so you can either order additional storage space or determine if there are files on the backup server which you no longer need. Before you delete files permanently, remember we offer a service to archive your files to CD or DVD. The CD or DVD will be shipped to you. So if you want to reduce the amount of data you have already stored on the server by deleting files but you are not 100% certain that you might not need a file or files in the future, have us archive them for your permanent storage. See Additional Services for more information.

What happens if I have a transmission or modem connection failure during a backup?
The backup client software is smart enough to reconvene the backup where it stopped once the transmission or modem connection failure has been remedied.

Is there any charge for retrieval?
There is no charge to retrieve or restore files on line. There is a nominal fee should you want us to place your files on CD’s to be shipped to you. See Additional Services for more information.

What if I lose my encryption key?
You do not want to lose your encryption key. We do not know, nor do we want to know, your encryption key. If you lose your key, you will want to delete the files on the backup server and initiate the backup process for all of your files with a new key. Any files archived with the original encryption key would not be accessible.
